Oscar Snub

Despite not being nominated, we at Lolable Comics were still being very optimistic about winning an award. Unfortunately it did not happen. We are very disappointed but there is always next year, and the year after, but that's it because of 2012.

How was the Oscars? I only saw the last three awards (actress, director, and movie). History was made. First the first female director to win. More importantly though, Sandra Bullock became the first actress to win a Oscar and a Razzie in the same year. The best part about it is that she actually showed up at the Razzie award ceremony, accepted the award, and did a speech. It was actually quite funny.

Beer Club and Oscars

I have recently learned of something called the Canadian Beer Club. It is a service where they will deliver three different kinds of beers to you each month. It sounds awesome although the fact that they have pictures of Sleeman's and NewCastle on their site makes me think the beers won't be all that interesting or exotic. It still would be a delicious treat to receive in the mail every month.

The Oscars are tomorrow...Lolable Comics weren't nominated for anything. Hell, we weren't even invited to present an award. What is that all about? I hope Avatar doesn't win Best Picture. Not that it was a bad movie, in fact it was quite an amazing movie. If it does win though it essentially bought the award. It should be a shoe in for best visuals and some of the other more technical awards though.

Go Canada Go!

I don't really need to say anything else other than "Go Canada Go!" for this blog to mean something, but I will anyways. Everyone knew going into this game that it was going to be big. I'm not sure if people realized HOW big it was. 2/3 of the country watched the game and I'm sure that everyone will know where they were when they talk about the game 20 years from now. Incase you were wondering, I was at Dave's. We mixed Alexander Keith's White with Alexander Keith's Red Amber to make a real Canadian beer. Then played a lil hockey afterwards for kicks. Good game by the US team, they made it super close and it was a game for the ages. Once I found out that Luongo was going to get the start against the Germans, I said that if he wins us a gold I'll be getting a Luongo jersey. Looks like I just need to figure out if I'm getting a Canada one or a Vancouver one.

The closing ceremonies where alright, however the music choices were a bit...off. It started off great with Neil Young and then got progressively worse, followed by Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Simple Plan, Alanis Morissette, Hedley, Marie-Mai and K-OS.

I'm all for having pop music and all that, but they were clearly representing Canada's music with this, and I felt it was really one sided. I mean, they could of easily had the Tragically Hip, Rush, or 3 Inches of Blood play to give a broader spectrum.

This song should have been included for sure.

If you don't know who the Tragically Hip are, give them a youtube search and check out some of their stuff. They are one of the biggest Canadian bands, though they're not really famous outside of Canada for some reason.

And as of yesterday, Jay Leno took back control of the Tonight Show, I wish him nothing but the worst of luck. I realize it's not his fault for any of it, but I've hated Leno for several years now. Oh sweet, he's talking to the bassist again, that was always funny.

Always.

Podcast and More Olympics

Everyone mark Thursday, February 25th on their calenders because history was made! For the first time Kyle and I recorded a podcast for Lolable Comics! For the most part it is us thinking of and writing the next few comics. It went pretty well minus a good portion where it wasn't recording but it turned out in the end. The podcast will be available for your listening pleasure in a couple weeks once all the discussed comics are posted. You didn't think we would give up weeks of storyline did you? We all know how much of a story there is on Lolable Comics.

I know that we have talked about the Olympics a lot here but there isn't really much else going on. It is dominating the media, especially since it is in Canada. Tomorrow is the last day though which includes the gold medal hockey game, Canada vs. USA. It couldn't of worked out much better considering how USA beat Canada in round robin and now they get a second chance in the gold medal game. Canada will be closed for about three hours on Sunday. Really, who won't be watching it?

Own The Podium

So Canada has admitted defeat with the "Own The Podium" program. In case you don't know what that is, it was basically Canada saying that we were going to win the Olympics. Now, maybe it's just me, but that sounds like a pretty bold state coming from the only country to never win a gold medal on home soil. (This is the third time we've had the Olympics) Would I like to see us win it all? Sure. Would it ever happen? Maybe, but let's take it one step at a time, we got 5 golds as of now, so we're doing better then last time.

Speaking of the Olympics, good luck Roberto Luongo and the rest of team Canada as you play against Germany tonight. A lot of people are writing this off as a win, but I'm not so sure. I mean, we have a great chance of winning, but if everyone writes it off as a sure thing I can see us losing. We better bring our A-game. Hell, bring the whole alphabet.

The League and Olympics

Completely unrelated to todays comic, this last week I have watched a little series called the League. There is only 6 episodes so far but it is hilarious. The whole show is based around a group of guys in a fantasy football league. I think that's enough said. If you are of a fan of comedy and/or football I would strongly recommend checking it out.

The Olympics are about halfway done and they've been quite entertaining so far. I haven't watched as much of the hockey as I wanted to so far, only the Canada games really, but it is still round robin. The teams seem to be much more evenly matched than most people would have thought, as was evident when the Canada vs. Switzerland game went into a shootout. Definately makes for better hockey to watch, unlike the women's tournament where the women outscored their opponents fourty something to 1 or 2 in 3 games. That's entertaining for about five minutes. Anyways the Canada vs USA game is on sunday and should be really good, and then the single elimination tournament to follow, so all huge games left; should be fun. The only beef I have is that the elimination games can be decided by shootouts. I do realize there are time constraints for the games though and it is necessary. However, I do like the the point system where a regulation win awards 3 points, overtime/shootout win 2 points, and overtime/shootout loss 1 point. That way every game is worth 3 points, not some 2 and some 3 like it is in the NHL.

Hockey, Ebert and Lasers.

So there's a rumor going around that the Atlanta Thrashers will be heading to Winnipeg, and it's supposed to be announced after the Olympics. Normally I'd be pretty skeptical, but this time I'll admit I'm not as skeptical as usual. There have been a lot of smaller rumors I've heard in the past about it, so I think it's actually possible.

In other news, I just found out that Roger Ebert hasn't been able to talk for the past 4 years now. I don't know why but this came as a huge shock to me. Here's a link to a story about it. Have I been living under a rock not knowing about this? Or was this just a huge secret. Anyways yeah, there it is.

I have some new stuff I've been working on, but I'm not sure how much I can say about it right now, but I'll let you know when I can. In the meantime enjoy this  site.

Winter Olympics, GO!

So the winter Olympics are now upon us, I've been reading a lot of mixed reactions to the opening ceremonies. For the most part it seems as though Canadians weren't big fans, while everyone else was (at least what I've read so far). It had it's ups and downs. Obviously the biggest down being when the one leg wouldn't come out for the torch, but I've read some people thinking it was done on purpose, as a nod to Nodar Kumaritashvili.

Speaking of which, my deepest condolences go out to his family. To have an accident like that happen is almost unbelievable. After the ceremonies, on the national news here (CBC), they actually played the video that showed his accident. They didn't have a warning or anything before it. Now mind you, it's not graphic in the sense that there is blood or limbs flying around. But I mean you're showing footage of a man dying. He's going 140kmph and into a metal support beam, and just stops instantly. So it's not like we don't know what happened to him. I was very disappointed in CBC for showing that, some bad judgment on their part.

Hopefully the rest of the Olympics goes well, obviously I'm looking forward to hockey. As everyone should.

Post-Bowl

Blog: So as we all know (or the majority at least), the super bowl was a couple of days ago. If you didn't watch it for the football you watched it for the commercials. Only problem with that is in Canada, we don't get those fancy schmancy commercials that cost so much money. I haven't watched them yet, but I do plan on checking them out, probably some time this week. Also as an added treat there is this new show "Undercover Boss". Basically the idea is that a companies president works the lowest level jobs for about a week, and then makes some changes based on what they saw.

Now, in this episode, it's the president of Waste Management and he's picking up garbage with this one woman, and she tells "the new guy" how the company will send out people to spy on them in these white pickup trucks, to make sure she's doing her job, and she says how she hates it, as the company has no trust in her. Eventually at the end of the show the president reveals himself, and everyone he worked with is all smiles and laughing. But man, if I was worried about spying before, this would make me go insane.

Apparently people are really liking the show, which is kinda strange in my books. Looks like reality TV has another liver it can transplant.
